In a join virtual seminar 6th Industrial Engineering and Management Seminars (ULHT) and Faculty of Industrial Technology Colloquium of Petra Christian University (Indonesia), Professor Diana Jorge presented her work in industrial logistics field named: Exact vs approximate optimization algorithms: na application to smart waste collection problem.

Exact optimization algorithms ensure the optimal solution is found, however, many times, they are not able to comply with compatible runtimes for practical operations. Approximate optimization algorithms, such as heuristics and metaheuristics, may be a good option to solve real-size problems, generating good solutions in an acceptable amount of time.
An operational logistics problem to which metaheuristics are relevant is: the waste collection problem with workload concerns. Some technological companies have been developing sensors to place inside waste bins for detecting bin fill levels across the day, which allow to build dynamic collection routes. In this context, a hybrid metaheuristic was developed for tackling real-size smart waste collection problems. For a real case study, the hybrid metaheuristic achieved a profit at least 45% higher than the profit obtained by the company.
